What Nectar is
Nectar is a recognition and engagement platform sold in modules. Recognize is the core: peer and manager shout-outs tagged to a company value, posted to a real-time feed, with points that redeem for gift cards, Amazon items, swag or custom perks such as an afternoon off. Around it sit Engage (eNPS and custom surveys), Comms (announcements by email, SMS, Slack, Teams and digital signage) and Flows (automation). A company can start with recognition alone and add the rest later.
The pricing page names the bundles but not the prices. Its homepage says the product is priced per employee per month, and every path on the site ends at a demo request.
Who it suits
Nectar has clearly invested in reaching people who do not sit at a desk. Recognition can arrive by SMS or WhatsApp, the mobile app does not require a work email, and kiosk mode covers a shared screen in a break room. If you run a hospital, a plant or a retail estate, that reach is the feature, and few chat-native tools can offer it.
The trade is a rewards budget on top of the subscription, a catalogue to administer, and a redemption step that takes the recipient out of chat and into the Nectar app. Gift cards and Amazon items are also a taxable benefit in most jurisdictions, which is a payroll conversation somebody has to have.
How the two products approach recognition
Evergreen assumes the recipient is already in Slack or Microsoft Teams. A colleague gives a seed with a message and optional value tags, it is posted to a public channel, and that is the recognition. Every three seeds a person receives are planted as one real tree through a reforestation partner. The company sees the results on a reporting dashboard, gets a monthly team recap, and can publish a public impact page. There are no points to convert, so there is no budget, no catalogue and no tax question.
Both products let you tag recognition to a company value and report on it. Nectar goes further with its culture insights and a quality meter that nudges people to write better. Evergreen keeps the tags and the analytics, and relies on weekly reminders and the public channel to keep quality up. Our company values pages describe what a good tagged message looks like for each value.
On price, Nectar is quoted per employee and not published. Evergreen is $3.99 per active user per month, where an active user is anybody who interacted with the app that month, with a 14-day trial and no card. For a 200-person Slack workspace where 140 people take part in a given month, that is a bill for 140.
What switching involves
Points cannot move between systems, so the first step is a redemption deadline for anything left in Nectar. Export the recognition history you want to keep, then install Evergreen in the channel where recognition posts already appeared and set up your values as tags. The weekly reminder and the public feed take over the job that Nectar’s nudges were doing, and the recognition guide covers how to announce the change without making it sound like a downgrade.
Where Nectar is strong
Points redeem for over 200 gift cards plus the full Amazon catalogue, with swag and custom perks such as time off.
Reaches frontline and deskless staff through SMS, WhatsApp, a mobile app that needs no work email, and kiosk mode.
Recognition is tagged to a core value and the culture insights report shows which values are named most.
Slack and Microsoft Teams apps let people send recognition from chat, with posts to selected channels and milestone alerts.
Budgets can be split by department, location or cost centre, and surveys and internal comms are available as add-on modules.
Where it falls short
Pricing is only available through a demo, with no free tier or trial stated on the site.
Redemption happens in the Nectar web or mobile app, so the chat integration is a front door rather than the whole product.
The rewards budget sits on top of the platform fee, and gift cards or Amazon items are a taxable benefit in most countries.
No charity or environmental reward option appears on the site, so the only thing points can become is something the recipient buys.
How Evergreen differs
- A published price
Evergreen is $3.99 per active user per month, on the pricing page, with a 14-day trial and no card. There is nothing to quote.
- Trees, not a catalogue
Every three seeds a person receives are planted as one real tree. There is no rewards budget to fund, no Amazon catalogue to police and no taxable benefit to report.
- Only active users are billed
Somebody who never opens the app in a month is not on the invoice. Nectar prices per employee.
- The channel is the product
A seed is given in Slack or Teams and posted publicly with its message and value tags. The dashboard, monthly recap and public impact page sit behind it, but nobody needs a second login to take part.
Verdict
If most of your workforce is on a shop floor, a ward or a delivery route, and you need recognition to arrive by SMS alongside company announcements, Nectar is built for that and Evergreen is not. If your people live in Slack or Teams and you want recognition that costs a known amount, needs no rewards budget and plants something real, Evergreen is the simpler answer.
Questions people ask
- Does Nectar publish its pricing?
No. The Nectar pricing page lists bundles of its Recognize, Engage, Comms and Flows modules but no prices, and the homepage says it is priced per employee per month. Every plan is quoted after a demo. Evergreen publishes one price, $3.99 per active user per month.
- Can Nectar recognition be redeemed for charity or trees?
The Nectar site describes redemption for gift cards, Amazon items, swag and custom perks. No charity or environmental option is shown. Evergreen has no redemption at all: three seeds received become one planted tree.
- Is Evergreen a good Nectar alternative for frontline teams?
Usually not. Nectar reaches people through SMS, WhatsApp and a mobile app that does not need a work email. Evergreen lives in Slack and Microsoft Teams, so it suits teams that are already there.
