What Assembly is

Assembly is a recognition and rewards platform with a published price. The Empower plan, at $3 per user per month billed yearly, bundles peer-to-peer recognition, points and budget controls, a global reward catalogue, milestone celebrations, announcements, awards and challenges, an AI layer called Dora and people analytics. An Enterprise plan adds security options, custom integrations and tailored implementation at a quoted price. Redemption examples on the homepage include Starbucks gift cards and charity donations, and there is a swag integration.

Where Assembly stands out is the integration list: a Slack bot, a Microsoft Teams integration and 77 SSO and HRIS sync options, from Workday and SAP SuccessFactors to Gusto and Personio. Even so, both plans are sold through a demo, and no free plan or trial appears on the pricing page.

Who it suits

A company that wants a conventional points programme and has an HRIS it wants recognition to follow, so that new starters appear, leavers disappear and anniversaries fire without anyone maintaining a list. The awards and challenges can be shaped around company values, and the analytics are aimed at an HR team that reports upward. At $3 per user, it is one of the more affordable full platforms, provided you are happy to commit for a year and to budget for rewards on top.

How the two products approach recognition

Evergreen has no points. A colleague gives a seed in Slack or Microsoft Teams with a message and optional value tags, and it is posted to a public channel. Every three seeds a person receives are planted as one real tree through a reforestation partner. The company gets a reporting dashboard with values analytics, a monthly team recap and a public impact page, and that is the extent of the web experience. Nobody logs into Evergreen to say thank you.

The two products price differently in a way that matters more than the headline numbers suggest. Assembly is $3 per user, for every user, billed yearly. Evergreen is $3.99 per active user per month, billed monthly, where an active user is somebody who interacted that month. In a company where two thirds of people take part in a given month, the two are close in cost before Assembly’s rewards budget is added and far apart after it. There is a 14-day Evergreen trial and no card is needed.

Assembly wins on HRIS. Evergreen has no HRIS marketplace and does not need one for billing, since it counts active users, but if you want recognition data to flow into Workday, Assembly can and Evergreen cannot. The recognition guide has a section on deciding whether that integration is a requirement or a habit.

What switching involves

Set a deadline for redeeming points and export the analytics you want to keep. Map your Assembly award types to Evergreen value tags, install Evergreen in the channels your team uses, and let the weekly reminder and monthly recap keep the habit alive. Anniversaries and birthdays stop being automatic; some teams keep a shared calendar and give a seed by hand.

Where Assembly is strong

  • A published price of $3 per user per month on the Empower plan, which is uncommon among platforms with a full reward catalogue.

  • Peer recognition, points and budget controls, milestone celebrations, announcements, awards and challenges and a global reward catalogue in one plan.

  • Integrations with Slack and Microsoft Teams, and an SSO and HRIS sync list of 77 systems including Workday, BambooHR, Rippling, Personio, SAP SuccessFactors and Okta.

  • Custom awards and challenges can be built around company values.

  • SOC 2 Type II and GDPR are listed.

Where it falls short

  • The $3 price is billed yearly, and even the paid plan is sold through a demo rather than self-serve.

  • No free plan or trial appears on the pricing page, and the FAQ about rewards funding has no answer text visible.

  • Rewards redeemed for gift cards are a taxable benefit and the rewards budget is a cost on top of the subscription.

  • Recognition and redemption live in the Assembly app; the Slack and Teams integrations connect to it rather than replace it.

How Evergreen differs

Monthly, active users only

Evergreen is $3.99 per active user per month, billed monthly for people who interacted that month, with a 14-day trial and no card. Assembly bills every user yearly.

Tree, not points

Every three seeds a person receives are planted as one real tree. There is no points balance, no budget control and no catalogue.

Recognition stays in chat

A seed is given in Slack or Microsoft Teams and posted to a public channel with its message and value tags. The web holds the reporting, monthly recap and public impact page.

Values tagging and analytics

Value tags are on every seed by default and the dashboard reports on them without awards or challenges to configure.

Verdict

Assembly is a good pick for a company that wants a points programme with a catalogue and needs recognition wired to an HRIS at a price it can read on the website. Evergreen is the better pick if you want to skip the rewards budget entirely, pay monthly for the people who actually take part, and have recognition live in the channel rather than an app, with a tree planted for every three seeds.
