Guusto Alternative: Evergreen vs Guusto
For companies comparing Guusto with a peer recognition app. Guusto is a way for managers to send gift cards, including to people with no desk; Evergreen is colleagues thanking each other in Slack or Teams, with a tree planted for every three seeds.

What Guusto is
Guusto is a gift-card and rewards platform. An HR team or manager loads funds, then sends gift cards, redeemable at a wide range of merchants, to employees by web, mobile app, SMS, print or QR code. Paid tiers add milestone and birthday automation, bulk sends, random draws, leaderboards, a social feed, approvals, budget automation and a taxable benefit report. Gift cards are charged at face value, unclaimed gifts are credited back in full on paid tiers, and Guusto donates to One Drop clean-water projects for every gift sent.
Pricing has two axes. Essential is $4 per sender seat and $0.70 per recipient seat per month with a $200 monthly minimum; Premium is $5 and $1 with a $500 minimum; both minimums are billed annually. Lite is $150 a month for one sender and 250 recipients, and there is a free tier for a single sender. Microsoft Teams, SSO, API and global rewards are Premium features. Slack is not mentioned on the pages we read.
Who it suits
Companies whose people are not at a desk. Guusto’s industry pages are healthcare, hospitality, retail, construction, manufacturing and financial services, and the print and QR delivery exists because a hotel housekeeper does not have a Slack account. It also suits a company whose recognition is mostly top-down: a manager decides, a budget pays and a card arrives. The unclaimed-gift credit and the face-value pricing are genuinely fairer than much of the market.
How the two products approach recognition
Evergreen is peer to peer. Every active user gets a small weekly allowance of seeds to give to colleagues in Slack or Microsoft Teams, each with a message and optional value tags, posted to a public channel. Every three seeds a person receives are planted as one real tree through a reforestation partner. The company gets a reporting dashboard with values analytics, a monthly team recap and a public impact page. Nobody holds a budget, because there is nothing to fund.
That makes Evergreen useless for the thing Guusto does best. You cannot send a seed to a contractor without a Slack account, and you cannot make a seed worth $50. What you can do is have a hundred people thank each other on a Tuesday without anyone approving it, and know at the end of the month which values came up most.
Price is simpler too: $3.99 per active user per month, billed only for people who interacted that month, with a 14-day trial and no card. There is no sender seat, no recipient seat and no minimum.
What switching involves
Many companies would run both, using Guusto for milestones and frontline rewards and Evergreen for everyday peer recognition among desk-based teams. If you are replacing Guusto outright, spend or cancel outstanding gifts, export the reports you want, then install Evergreen in your Slack or Teams workspace, set up your values as tags and choose a public channel. The weekly reminder does the work a manager used to do by remembering.
Where Guusto is strong
A free tier for a single sender with no minimum spend, and a 30-day trial on Lite.
Gift cards are charged at face value and unclaimed gifts are credited back in full on paid tiers, which the site says saves 10 to 20 percent a year.
Delivery by web, mobile, SMS, print and QR code reaches people who never log in, and the site lists multiple languages and purchase power parity.
A clean-water donation to One Drop for every gift sent, and charity donations as a redemption option from Essential upwards.
Milestone and birthday automation, bulk sends, random draws, leaderboards, manager insights and a taxable benefit report.
Where it falls short
Pricing has two axes, sender seats and recipient seats, plus monthly minimums of $200 or $500 billed annually on the tiers most companies would use.
Microsoft Teams, SSO, API and global rewards are Premium only, and Slack is not mentioned on the pricing, homepage or integrations pages.
Guusto is top-down by design: the rewards budget is the programme, and the money is a taxable benefit.
Company-values tagging is not described on the site.
How Evergreen differs
- Peer to peer, not sender to recipient
Everybody in Evergreen gives and receives. A seed is given in Slack or Microsoft Teams with a message and optional value tags and posted publicly. There is no sender seat.
- One price, no minimum
Evergreen is $3.99 per active user per month, only for people who interacted that month, with a 14-day trial and no card.
- A tree instead of a gift card
Every three seeds a person receives are planted as one real tree. No funding, no unclaimed balances and nothing taxable.
- Values and reporting
Seeds carry value tags, the dashboard reports on them, and a monthly recap and public impact page show what the team did.
Verdict
Guusto and Evergreen solve different problems. If a manager needs to send a $25 gift card to a nurse, a driver or a warehouse team, by SMS or on paper, Guusto is good at exactly that and its face-value, credited-back model is fair. If you want colleagues to recognise each other every week in the channel where they already work, with no rewards budget and a tree as the outcome, Evergreen is the right shape.
Questions people ask
- How does Guusto pricing work?
Guusto charges per sender seat and per recipient seat. Essential is $4 per sender and $0.70 per recipient per month with a $200 monthly minimum; Premium is $5 and $1 with a $500 minimum, billed annually. Lite is $150 a month for one sender and 250 recipients, and there is a free single-sender tier. Gift cards are funded separately at face value.
- Does Guusto work with Slack?
Slack is not mentioned on the Guusto pricing, homepage or integrations pages we read; Microsoft Teams, SharePoint and Outlook integrations are listed on the Premium tier. Evergreen runs in both Slack and Microsoft Teams.
- Is Guusto or Evergreen better for peer recognition?
Evergreen. Guusto is organised around senders who hold a budget and recipients who redeem. Evergreen gives every active user a weekly seed allowance to give to colleagues, so recognition flows sideways rather than down.
