Reward redemption

In an employee recognition programme, reward redemption is the process of exchanging an eligible balance or entitlement for an available reward, subject to the programme’s stated rules.

Explain the transition from recognition to reward

Someone can understand why they were thanked and still be unsure how a reward balance works. Redemption is the separate step where an eligible balance or entitlement is used. Keeping that distinction clear helps a programme avoid implying that every recognition automatically produces an available reward.

The details depend on the programme. Some use points and a catalogue; others have a different mechanism. Explain the actual options rather than borrowing language from a system the organisation does not use. This page concerns employee programmes, not consumer loyalty accounts or payment-card rewards.

Make the conditions visible before the action

An employee should be able to understand what they can request, what it requires and what happens next. Where there are eligibility limits, expiry rules or fulfilment delays, explain them at the point where they affect the decision. An inaccessible option should not become a surprise after a balance has been used.

Keep the confirmation equally clear. It should distinguish a request received from a reward fulfilled and provide an appropriate route for a problem. Do not describe a pending action as completed merely because a button was clicked.

Measure the experience without confusing it with appreciation

Redemption activity can show whether a reward mechanism is being used, but it does not by itself prove that recognition feels meaningful. Examine access issues and unresolved requests alongside usage. The points-based recognition guide explains one common balance model; recognition approval describes a separate decision stage that some programmes use.

What it looks like

  • Example: an employee selects an eligible reward and receives a clear confirmation of what was requested and what happens next.

  • Example: a programme explains an unavailable option before the employee commits their balance, rather than revealing the restriction afterwards.

Questions people ask

Is redemption the same as receiving recognition?

No. Recognition acknowledges a contribution; redemption uses an eligible reward balance or entitlement. A programme can recognise someone without offering a redeemable reward, and the two experiences should be explained separately.

What information should be clear before redemption?

Explain eligibility, the required balance, available options and what happens after confirmation. Include relevant restrictions or expiry rules where they exist. Do not assume every programme has the same terms.

How does this relate to Evergreen?

Evergreen uses seeds for recognition. On an eligible paid subscription, three received seeds can be planted as one real tree. Trial seeds do not plant real trees. Check the product’s current entitlement and balance before offering that action.
