Sustainability
Sustainability is usually a company-level target with a company-level report. The behaviour behind it belongs to individuals, and they are almost never recognised by name.
A company target, made of individual acts
Sustainability reporting works at the level of the whole company: tonnes avoided, trees planted, a target for 2030. Nothing in it has a name attached.
The behaviour that produces those numbers does. Somebody found the cluster that had been running empty for two years. A colleague took the train and lost a day. One person changed the log retention from forever to ninety days.
Recognise the cost and the default
Two kinds of act deserve particular notice. The one that cost the person something, like the train or the remote offsite, proves the value is real. The one that changed a default, like the retention setting, does more than a year of reminders, because everyone after it makes the better choice without deciding to.
How you would know
- Turns off what is not being used
Shuts down the idle environment, a forgotten instance, or the report nobody reads.
- Chooses the lower-footprint option when it costs them
Takes the train, holds the meeting remotely, orders the smaller amount.
- Makes waste visible
Puts a number on the thing the team was throwing away.
- Fixes the default
Changes the setting or the process so the better choice becomes the one everybody makes without thinking.
6 messages that name it
You found the staging cluster that had been running empty since 2023 and turned it off. That was a month of the team’s compute bill and a few tonnes of carbon nobody was counting.
ManagerA specific act with a specific saving.
Thank you for taking the train to Berlin and losing a day to do it. Nobody would have said anything about the flight.
PeerThe cheaper-for-them option was available and not taken.
You put the number on the printouts, and the number was enough. Nobody has printed the weekly report since.
ManagerMaking waste visible changed behaviour without a policy.
Kofi changed the default retention on the logs from forever to ninety days. That one setting undid three years of nobody deciding.
ManagerFixing the default rather than the behaviour.
You proposed the remote offsite and took the disappointment for it. It saved eighteen flights and the agenda was better.
PeerA personal cost for a shared reduction.
Thanks for setting up the reuse shelf for hardware. Twelve laptops have gone to new starters instead of a skip.
PeerA small system with a countable outcome.
What its absence looks like
Where sustainability is absent, idle systems run for years, the footprint is somebody in another department’s problem, and the person who takes the train is thought slightly eccentric.
Recognising it well
Name the number. Sustainability recognised in the abstract is a poster; a staging cluster running empty since 2023 is a fact with a cost the reader can picture.
Recognise the personal cost. The train that lost a day and the remote offsite that disappointed people are the acts that prove the value is real.
Credit the default. The person who changed a setting so that everyone makes the better choice without thinking has done more than a year of reminders.
Questions people ask
- What does sustainability mean as a company value?
Individually, it means choosing the option that uses fewer resources when a more convenient one was available and nobody was checking. The corporate target is the sum; the behaviour is the part a colleague can be recognised for.
- How do you recognise sustainable behaviour at work?
Name the act and the number. An idle cluster turned off, a flight replaced by a train, a retention setting changed from forever to ninety days. Each has a cost avoided that can be stated, and stating it is what makes the recognition specific.
- Is this the same as the company’s ESG reporting?
The reporting counts the trees planted and the tonnes avoided. The behaviour is what produces the numbers, and it is done by named people in ordinary weeks who mostly assume nobody noticed.
- Why is sustainability rarely recognised at the individual level?
Because it is measured at the company level, and a company-wide figure has no name attached. Recognition has to find the person who turned the cluster off and say so where colleagues can read it.
